The TWAIN Working Group Releases the 2.1 Specification

The TWAIN Working Group (www.twain.org), a not-for-profit organization which provides the leading royalty-free image-capture API, today announced its release of the TWAIN Specification Version 2.1 and Data Source Manager Version 2.1.

TWAIN 2.1 includes new features such as automatic sizing, automatic color detection, setting the default data source, automatic selection of the document feeder versus the flatbed and enhancements to improve performance. The 2.1 release also provides some enhancements to the specification to improve its clarity and to remove ambiguity. The 2.1 Specification can be downloaded from the TWAIN web site at www.twain.org.

Additionally, TWAIN is pleased to announce the addition of Atalasoft to the TWAIN Board of Directors. Atalasoft, headquartered in Easthampton, MA, builds software that improves how people work with documents over the web through image viewing, annotating, and processing technology. Atalasoft provides an automated, free self-certification tool called InspectorTWAIN, which enables manufacturers to extensively test their TWAIN data sources and drivers against the latest version of the TWAIN specification.

“We are pleased to have Atalasoft as our newest member” said Pamela Doyle, Chair of the TWAIN Working Group and Director at Fujitsu Computer Products of America. “As hardware manufacturers use self-certification tools to test their drivers we believe we will see a significant increase in the quality of TWAIN drivers resulting in a more positive end user experience.”

“Over the years TWAIN has remained true to our goals of operating system independence, backward compatibility and to constantly evolve the standard to meet the changing needs of the industry” said Doyle. “The 2.1 release further validates that commitment. We encourage other vendors to join our ranks who are willing to help evolve the standard to benefit the industry as a whole.”

November 2, 2009, Ashburn, VA — Brainware, Inc., a provider of intelligent data capture and enterprise search solutions, today announced the release of its latest version of Brainware Distiller™ for automated data extraction and document processing. Brainware Distiller V5 was developed specifically to meet the needs of Global 2000 organizations. New capabilities include:

    * Browser-Based Verification – Brainware Distiller users can now review and verify documents anytime and anywhere using a standard web browser. This application further reduces the already low IT investments required to deploy and support the solution.

    * CJKT Recognition and Extraction – Brainware Distiller now supports double-byte character recognition and extraction, enabling users to process documents in languages that include Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Thai.

    * 48-Hour Implementation – Brainware’s proprietary intelligent technologies eliminate the extensive setup times required to train and configure traditional keyword and template-based solutions. This enables Brainware to deliver fully operational solutions in as little as 48-hours, versus the months and years required to achieve the same results from other solutions.

“In today’s financial climate, companies tell us they’re more risk averse and that new business and IT initiatives must show a rapid return and low cost of ownership to justify consideration,” explained Charles Kaplan, Vice President of Marketing and Product Management at Brainware. “To meet these demands, we have continued to develop our core technologies and the Distiller platform to achieve setup and deployment times that no other vendor in the industry can match.”

It does not end with only data integration they also allow for business integration, messaging processing, service enablement, and management of business processes. Its motto: “Don’t code integration, assemble it”

iWay was recently recognized for expanding its Universal Adapter Suite for IBM WebSphere. “This allows companies to more effectively leverage underlying technologies for service-oriented architecture (SOA) and WebSphere-based deployments”

However my research is focused on data integration with Hyland’s OnBase. and other systems. Product seems very superior so something to keep tabs on.

There is no question Kofax has made a lot of changes over the past year, as CEO Reynolds Bish has really put his stamp on the company. In October of 2008 Bish was named “Director of the Year for Companies in Transition” by the Corporate Directors Forum, an organization that promotes excellence in corporate governance. The award recognizes a director who has significantly contributed to taking a company through major changes such as its start-up, a merger, an acquisition, the sale of the company, executive management changes or other events.

Since then Bish’s main focus has been to increase the Kofax average deal size by creating a strong direct sales force. Of course, this created concerns about Kofax’s dedication to the VAR channel, which has historically served as its primary sales force. That’s why it was refreshing to see a recent announcement about the Irvine, CA-based software vendor hiring two industry veterans with substantial channel experience.

Dan Lucarini, who has been named senior director of business development, was for years a big advocate and marketing director for the Alchemy reseller channel. He left Captaris after its acquisition by Open Text. And Barbara Lanci, who has been named senior director of partner strategy and development, was a director of channel development for Kofax in the late 1990s. Both will report to Jim Vickers.

AnyDoc Software, Inc., an industry-leading developer of automated document, data capture, and classification solutions, announced today their client Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) has been named a finalist for the 2009 AIIM Carl E. Nelson Best Practices Award. CMSD was selected based upon their solution implementation of OCR for AnyDoc®, provided by AnyDoc systems integrator, Results Engineering.

The Carl E. Nelson Best Practices Award presented by AIIM, the Association for Enterprise Content Management (ECM), recognizes excellence in the ECM field. The term “Best Practices” denotes a standard of excellence that has been achieved within an organization and refers to a process or implementation that can be quantified, adapted, and repeated.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by AIIM for the commitment we have made to ‘Transformation through Innovation’ at Cleveland Metropolitan School District,” said Joe Podach, deputy chief of operations and performance improvement at CMSD. “Being able to save money while improving our processes has resulted in a great impact at CMSD, and we are continuing to improve our finances, academics, and paper processes,” he continued.

CMSD needed an automated system to process the 18,600 free and reduced meal program applications and 18,000 school uniform program applications. Working with Results Engineering, LLC, a Westerville, Ohio-based workflow systems integrator, CMSD implemented OCR for AnyDoc to automatically capture and process incoming applications. OCR for AnyDoc utilizes advanced recognition engines to capture all the desired data from the scanned digital images. The software then verifies the data against CMSD’s business rules and databases to ensure accuracy.

Using OCR for AnyDoc, CMSD’s uniform and meal programs resulted in a highly accurate and efficient, speedy solution that reduced the need to hire approximately 50 temporary employees, eliminating $280,000 in labor costs. They reduced labor needs by 65 percent, eliminating thousands of hours of manual data entry. Not only did they achieve an ROI within nine months, but with the addition of AnyDoc®INVOICE™ as part of an enterprise Procure-to-Pay system, AnyDoc Software will help produce a total cost savings of over seven figures, paying for itself 10 times over in its first five years.

The AIIM Best Practices Award will be presented at the AIIM Expo and Conference in Philadelphia, during the AIIM Annual Awards Celebration on March 31 at The Union League.

This marks the fourth time AnyDoc customers have been finalists for the AIIM Best Practices Awards, including a win for Allegheny County Controllers Office in the large category for 2008.
